The Georgian Gardens Curriculum

'...senior leaders have focused on the quality of education provided to pupils.  They have ensured that there is a broad and balanced curriculum in place for all'  Ofsted, March 2022

Intent and Implementation of our Curriculum

At Georgian Gardens we pride ourselves in knowing every child as an individual and want to ensure that we provide every pupil with a chance to excel whilst they are at our school.  Our dynamic approach allows our curriculum to support the needs of our children rather than expecting children to just 'fit' into the existing curriculum.  Our school approach is based around three simple statements:  Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe.  These key messages run throughout all aspects of our pupils' lives in school.

Emotional wellbeing comes first at Georgian Gardens and as one of the only 'Thrive' Schools in West Sussex we are fortunate to have trained staff who are always available to help both our pupils and their families.  Education for Safeguarding is a prominent subject which is taught to children in all year groups covering the vital life aspects of relationships, digital and media literacy, physical health and wellbeing and emotional health and wellbeing.  This is tailored to the context of our school.

Our range of curriculum opportunities are broad and balanced, we really believe in trying to find the catalyst that inspires each child's passion, to ignite their desire for life long learning.  We are passionate about the Arts and promoting opportunities for all pupils to participate.  Every term each year group has a day of learning with both a music and dance specialist teacher.  We offer a diverse range of extra curricula opportunities to enrich our curriculum offer even further.   For example, taking part in a rock band or helping to build a battery operated car.  Georgian Gardens also promotes excellence in sports and recognises both the physical and emotional benefits of regular exercise for our pupils.

'Staff across the school have worked together to break the curriculum down into manageable chunks of learning for pupils. If pupils fall behind, they received additional, targeted support to help them catch up'  Ofsted, March 2022

As a school we always work closely with our families to strive towards the very best outcomes for our pupils.  We are a school at the heart of its community and actively encourage children to take pride in their local community, taking part in activities such as art displays at the local train station and singing in local residential homes.   We are ambitious to continually expand our opportunities for learning outside the classroom and utilise local resources such as the beach, our own woodland area and quad garden.

We want every one of our pupils to leave our school in Year 6 being ready to learn even more, with the ability to respect themselves, others and the world around them and the knowledge to keep themselves and others safe.

The grid below shows the topics that the children will be studying each term in the different year groups.

For more information about our curriculum please speak to your child's class teacher or contact our school office.

English and Maths
English and maths are taught in mixed ability classes throughout the school. Our recently reviewed English curriculum, the detail of which can be seen below, is designed to ensure progression, connectivity and continuity. English is taught through the use of high quality texts which are used to inspire and excite our children. Children at Georgian Gardens develop a love of both writing and reading. Reading is our top priority in school with children starting their reading journey from the moment they start school with access to a huge range of wonderful texts in all year groups and in our school library. A joy of reading is fostered and is visible in school.

Phonics is taught through the 'Song of Sounds' scheme which is accredited by the DfE. Consistent, high quality teaching enables our children to learn how to successfully use their phonics knowledge to begin reading. A guide for parents can be found here: https://www.songofsounds.co.uk/page/?title=Parent+Guide&pid=14

Maths is taught through the 'White Rose' scheme across the school. Manipulatives are used to enhance learning. Clear progression steps in the planning ensure that children have a secure understanding as they work through each concept.
Parental rights to withdraw a child from R.E. lessons

A parent may request:
• that their child be either wholly or partly excused from receiving RE given in accordance with the Agreed Syllabus;
• that a pupil who is wholly or partly excused from receiving RE provided by the school may receive RE of the kind desired by the parents elsewhere, provided that it will not interfere with the attendance of the pupil on any day except at the beginning or end of the school session.

Subject Curriculum Pathways
At Georgian Gardens we value the progression of skills across all subject areas from the moment they arrive in school until the moment they leave. Each subject leader has produced a document that outlines this progression. On overview of the progression for each foundation subject can be found below in the format of a curriculum pathway.
